5th Wall Performance, the fresh new voice in Shanghai independent theater, presents Marriage Counseling: Three Sessions at the River South Art Center, November 14-16, event beginning at 7 pm.
Written, devised and performed by members of the 5th Wall ensemble, Marriage Counseling explores betrayal, deceit and love in the relationship of a modern couple, whose carefully constructed marriage devolves as each penetrates the other’s web of lies. The first therapeutic session realizes the couple as an urban, middle-class husband and wife. The second session asks an alternative question: what if the relationship were between two women? In this way, Marriage Counseling explores subtle differences in gender and gendered expectations. The last session reinterprets the scene in the context of physical theater, obviating the verbal text for a bodily text of modern dance, Thai boxing, religious ritual and other elements of movement.
Performed inside River South Art Center’s 100 year-old warehouse, Marriage Counseling also integrates the gallery’s unique architecture into the performance environment. Each session is enacted in a different part of the art center, emphasizing spatial as well as theoretical recontextualization as a vital part of the theatrical experience. Pre-show drinks and after-party are included in the ticket price of RMB 200.
5th Wall Performance is a new performance collective in Shanghai, currently comprised of actors, performance artists, writers, designers, photographers and filmmakers from the USA, Europe, Taiwan and the Middle East. Its mission is to take seriously the idea of play, exploring, re-imagining and re-enacting the world around us. 5th Wall Performance strives not merely to be a passive social filter, but also an actively thought-provoking element in Shanghai’s cultural life.
